Well after the first bout of oil leaks I tightened down all the bolts around the various components that were accessible and appeared to have a lot of oil on them... since that time I haven't had any oil leaking from those spots.

This morning I came out and found a small spot of oil on the ground(about 2 inches diameter).

Pulled off the right side panel and tracked the oil up the side of the engine to the rear balancer area.

Has anyone had any problems with oil leaking from this area? I have looked through the service manual and don't see any gaskets associated with parts in this area so I'm not certain what it could be... O-ring?

Here is a pic of the area where the leak appears to be coming from(not a great shot but will give you an idea.. it's behind the CCT)... in the second pic you can see, just under the black hose, the small bit of oil build up.

This is what the service manual says about that area...(could it be the o-ring on the end of the balancer shaft? That is a very hard area to get any tools into... any advice how to get into there and possibly tighten those bolts up if that might be the problem or should I just take it to the dealer and have them do it?

Maybe the CCT gasket is bad?

Mine leaked there after I failed to tighten to the proper torque specifications. :icon_doh:

The pics of the leaking (or I should say that the TIME you took the pics ) were too generalized to be able to tell where that oil is leaking from. Might I suggest that you re-clean that area, and take the bike for a shorter ride. When a leakage gets to that point where it's over multiple surfaces or potential leak spots, it's harder to tell where it started. Keep the ride time shorter and the ride speed shorter(less air blowing the oil back and less acceleration ).

Any shorter a ride and it wouldn't have leaked. I tried a 5 min ride but showed no signs of leaking after having cleaned that entire surface area.

Speed was kept under 70mph during the ride and shifting was kept under 6k rpm.

Having said that, I took the bike by my local Honda dealer and had the mechanic check out the leak/area. He said "that's a bad o-ring on the rear balancer" and he explained to me that the fix was easy and he has seen it on several honda's over the last couple of years but mostly 929's and 954's... said they don't get many birds in so he can't confirm whether it has been a problem with them or not(though I suspect not since I haven't seen any posts relating to this issue).

He showed me how to replace the supposedly worn o-ring.

Last night I pulled the bike apart a bit and replaced the o-ring with the new $5 Honda o-ring, reassembled the bike and took it for a ride. No leaks. This morning's 30 mile ride to work was a better test. No leak.

$5 and 90 mins worth of time.

That certainly would have been easier to replace if that had been the problem.

I have never seen that one but its good to learn of it and the fix seems pretty straightforward. :icon_thumbsup:
