airborneXX Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 A friend of mine with a 2000 XX and 20,000 miles took it in to the stealer for some work. While it's there he had them replace the clutch discs and plates. They called him late this afternoon saying the basket has several hairline cracks in it and could come apart at any time. They want 300 bucks for the basket. He's going down to look at it and see for himself. The only thing he figures is that he runs the bike pretty hard, unlike the rest of us  and does alot of clutchless shifting. Never drag raced it just runs it hard on the street. Anybody else have or hear of this problem? Quote
Northman Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 and does alot of clutchless shifting. I can't fathom how clutchless shifting would affect the longevity of the clutch components. :? Why was he getting the plates replaced, anyway? Also, the factory unit is a cast piece. Not a very pretty one, so they may be mistaking casting marks for cracks. The Falicon billet unit is much nicer, and not much more than he was quoted for the stock one. It is noisier at idle, however. But if he's actually managed to crack the stock one, I'd suggest stepping up to billet. Quote
xfuctx Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 +1 Correct me if i'm wrong but clutchless shifting (incorrectly) would cause damage to the dogs and or forks? Quote

Guest rockmeupto125 Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 The basket costs nowhere near that much...so that includes other parts, or they are really taking him for a ride. I agree with Chris...I'm doubting them. Why would he have them fool with the clutch plates, anyway? Sounds like he had a problem with it already, rather than just a casual "change the clutch." We need more info. And shifting without the clutch won't do anything to the clutch itself. There's bullshit here someplace. Quote
airborneXX Posted July 20, 2005 Author Posted July 20, 2005 He takes real good care of his bike as far as servicing. Runs it hard as hell, but takes care of it. He has replaced alot of parts prematurely. He says he could feel the clutch slipping. We were going to do the clutch, he had already purchased the kit. He wanted to get the steering head adjusted, valves checked, and tires replaced. He figured while it was there let them throw the clutch kit in. I think they were pissed that he supplied the tires and kit, so they're throwing him a good :raped: He's a good mechanic himself. I kept telling him to bring it over here and we'll do it. Between what I already know and the knowledge here we don't need no stinkin' stealers I know what you mean about the casting of the basket. My 900c is cast and when I pulled it out it looked shitty but no actual cracks. Quote
Pete in PA Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 Just for the record I've never seen my clutch at just short of 60k miles. Still no slipage, and I've been to the dragstrip with 20 some launches in 2 hours. I call BS also from the dealer. Quote
02XXCA Posted July 23, 2005 Posted July 23, 2005 There screwing him, a full rusty trombone with a smile!!! Stealers are porbably pissed he already had the parts. Quote
airborneXX Posted August 3, 2005 Author Posted August 3, 2005 Thanks for all the advice. My buddy got his bike back last week. I didn't get to talk to him until today. He never asked the stealer for the basket  He's happy overall with the work and his bike has no scratches. So he got fooked out of 300 bucks. The stealer he went to is the best in the area. I will continue to do all my own work. Quote
airborneXX Posted August 3, 2005 Author Posted August 3, 2005 Thanks, but the damage is done he paid the dealer and maybe they installed a new one maybe they didn't  Quote
