the clutch on my 99 bird has just starting making a high pitched squeal when the lever is pulled in.has anyone got an idea what might be causing it ?.

i replaced chain and sprockets on saturday and its been running fine up until this afternoon. rode home from work and as i was coasting down my driveway with the clutch in i could hear a high pitched noise.clutch out no noise, clutch in and it squeals.clutch dosnt slip when riding.

Hey Man, how are you? Been a while since meeting you on your trip round the USA.

I'd suspect the bearing that the clutch push rod engages in the pressure plate.

Good luck and Ride Safe.

gday hank ,been well thanks mate,.how are you and leslie doing? my usa trip was great and a real eye opener.i intend heading back in the future, there is so much more to see there .planning on riding across australia next year to spend a few weeks riding around tasmania.

Is it a big job to replace the bearing or is it pretty straight forward.

the bike has just under 270 thousand klms on it and it is still on the original clutch.

the noise is there while sitting still and when coasting,in gear and in neutral.

Shouldn't be making noise while the bike is sitting still. Squealing is very bad.

I think you better take the cover off, pull the pressure plate and replace all the steels and fibers. That's a lot of miles on a clutch, even for a Bird.

To clarify, noise only when the clutch lever is pulled in, regardless of whether the bike is moving, in gear or not....
Pull the clutch lever in and it squeals...release the lever and the squeal stops?
Yes?

Les and I are doing well...thank you for asking.
We're planning a quick overnighter to Newport Rhode Island..one of our favorites.
Did you stop there?

thats it exactly,

if it was in a car i would pick it being a thrust bearing, but ive never had much to do with bike clutches.

didnt make it to newport rhode island.very pretty up that way but the amount of cops with radars i encountered was crazy, and such low speed limits.i was even finding them on little back roads.could have gotten very expensive for me so i bailed haha.

Look on the net for a blowup of the clutch...I tried to link one here but something is preventing it. (RonAyers.com for example)

There is a ball bearing in the pressure plate into which the push rod from the clutch slave cylinder engages.
I'm guessing this is what went bad.
Easy to get to, just remove the clutch cover with the bike leaned to the left and remove the 6 fasteners that hold the clutch springs.

The pressure plate will then come off and you'll be able to check the bearing.
You'll need a new gasket for the cover although case sealer will work too.
Very easy to fix Pete, let me know what you find.
Hank

Ctrl/prt scr, open paint, paste, save, crop, re-save, upload to board.Done. Piece of Cake.

More like - eye of newt, rat tongue, horny toad farts, and 100 year old absinthe......

(Linux version - I just hit the Print screen button, no CRTL, now I open GIMP (instead of Paint), ...and today only, it's like taking Halloween candy from a juvenile delinquent - Win XP I even didn't have to hit CTRL)

Try this exact scenario: Put the bike in first gear, pull in the clutch lever, and then start the bike. The thrust bearing should not be turning in this scenario, but would be if the trans was in neutral. Then, if you pull in the clutch lever, the clutch inner hub will likely continue to turn, due to the oil viscosity. But if you then put it into gear (clunk), the noise should stop.

hadnt started the bike for a few days so went to try the above.had no noise while the bike was cold,in gear or in neutral till the bike warmed up then i was getting some noise but only in neutral and not all the time.when i was getting noise i would pop it in gear and the noise would vanish.took it for a spin around the block and when i pulled up in my driveway in neutral it was noisy but pulling the clutch in and then releasing it the noise wasnt there each time i was pulling in the clutch.

hey Hank, thought you said it was an easy fix....took me forever to clean the old gasket off haha.

very straightforward job and seems to have done the trick.hardest part was getting all the old gasket off and guessing by hand what 12nm was.didnt snap or strip anything so must have done alright.

thanks for all the help.

another question i have is my bike seems to be taking longer for the temp to drop after being stuck in traffic.i know the bikes run hot but in the past once moving again the temp is back to normal after a few miles.now it takes a lot longer.have replaced the thermostat and radiator cap with no difference.new radiator and hoses were fitted in 2011 after the radiator got holed, radiator fins all good .coolant changed every 2 years with honda coolant (non silicate).the bike never gets into the red it just has me puzzled why it would start behaving that way all of a sudden.fan kicks in as normal.thought it might be the water pump not pumping well but running the bike with the radiator cap off i can see a strong flow of coolant once warmed up.

i will be ordering some other parts from the US soon and wondering if its worth ordering a new waterpump while im at it or just keep riding the bike as it is.
