Front Sprocket Attachment?

I'm installing new drive on the BB and found that neither the old stock front sprocket nor the new stock front sprocket tighten firmly on the output shaft. That is, when the retaining bolt is tight, the countershaft sprocket still has slight movement rotationally against the teeth of the shaft but also has some lateral play in an out along the shaft. Neither play is exhorbitant but hope someone can confirm for me whether that is normal or whether the retaining bolt should secure the sprocket firmly to the output shaft?

Thanks

The lateral movement on the shaft is normal, the sprocket "floats" on the splines. The play in spline engagement may or may not be of concern depending on how severe it is. Regardless, the bolt is not designed to hold the sprocket securely, it merely keeps it from sliding off the end of the shaft.

I've always had a tough time aligning the front sprocket splines so that it will slide on. If yours has noticeable rotational play, even with a new sprocket, I would take a close look at the shaft and/or try a different sprocket. I've never noticed any rotational play, and that is after a thousand plus passes down the drag-strip.
