Loose speedometer wire?

Zero Knievel

Recommended Posts

Finally got a chance to go for a ride. Halfway through the day, the speedometer kept loosing signal and eventually coming back. Often in response to hitting bumps in the road.

At one point, I pulled over and took off the saddle. The SpeedoHealer was firmly connected (not that it should come loose). Likewise, I tried to check the wires under the tank, but saw nothing obviously wrong.

With a Pro-Oiler and Speedo Healer, I'll have to check and clean all of the wires from the speed sensor. Maybe something is coming loose or it's just contaminated with dirt/oil.

Anything extra I should look for?

The speed sensor is in the block so chain lube can't affect it. It's about center of the block behind the cylinders and held down with two 10mm head bolts, it has a translucent white connector with black, green, & pink wires. The sensor could be going bad, but I'd go with connections first.

Well, stator and RR was replaced a couple years back. Voltmeter indicates the system is running strong. A loose connector fits the problem, BUT I just checked EVERYTHING, and every connection felt solid. I disconnected, cleaned and reconnected everything. Nothing looked that dirty. No basis to say it's a crimped or damaged wire. I'd think if the sensor was failing I'd get consistent readout failures (coming on and off for no apparent reason...right now it comes and goes if the bike gets a good jarring).

I don't ride as much as I'd like to now, but I'll watch it next time I go out...maybe hit a few bumps on purpose. If it stays away, it was dirt or "something" in the connectors.

I've looked over the shop manual. Unfortunately, it's not useful for Dxing an intermittent malfunction. I'm hoping to get another ride in today. If the problem doesn't come back, hopefully I fixed it by checking and cleaning the connections. If it does come back, I'm going to have to find a way to reproduce the problem when the bike is running on a center stand.

IIRC, running the bike in top gear (even at a high idle) should spin the rear tire enough to show a reading on the speedometer so I can spot a loss of signal.

So far, so good. No malfunctions.

Found an interesting diagnostic tip if you have a Pro-Oiler. My tap on the signal wire is right off the sensor, no other components. So, if I have another outage AND the decimal indicating no signal from the sensor lights up, I know it's the sensor. If it doesn't come on but the gauge is reading zero, it's not the sensor.
