  1. Thanks to JB4XX and Stefan for the offers!!! I really need to spend more time on this board - too many damn helpful people here :-) Thanks guys! Hi, I'm in need of a stock right clip on, or a set of other aftermarket clip ons that can retain the stock cables/hoses. Anyone have something they're looking to part with? I can pay with Paypal, cash, check, MO, whatever :-) Thanks! Tom
  2. Hi All, Thanks to a brief bout of stupidity, I'm in need of a headlight assembly, right mirror mount, and possibly a right side fairing piece for a 98 XX Anyone have any of the above they're interested in parting with? Condition doesn't really matter, as long as they're functional. Thanks! Tom
  3. I just spent the last hour reading this thread, since I didn't see it when it started. I'd say +1 to Erik for going out on a limb like this. Also +1 to Paul for sending over a set of pipes with no payment and no guarantee of ever being paid. I'd say it's hard to bust Paul's balls for being anything more than overenthusiastic about his product. IF he charged Erik and Northman for the pipes, it would be one thing, but since as yet they haven't paid anything, I can't put him in the prick category. Erik is happy with the look, sound, quality, and performance of his pipes, so I'd say it's mostly a good deal for him. Not to mention he has basically a one-off product on his bike (ok, 2-off with Northman's). I'll keep reading to see if anything else comes of this, though. Great read for a boring day at work
  4. Good eye my young Padowan. Those Splines would worry me more than the Sprocket Teeth because they are fuuucked uuppp. Hopefully the Designers of the bike (them little Jap Fuckers) made sure that the Countershaft Splines are considerably harder that the Sprocket. If not things could be ugly on that bike. Sorry for the slow reply, but I've been away since I posted this. Anyway, the countershaft was a good shape - I put the new sporcket on and it was nice and tight - no wiggle for the new one. Yet another reason to keep buying Hondas! I decieded that that bolt is never coming out, so I cut the sprocket cover so I could get to the sprocket. Perfect solution? Definitely not. Working solution? Sure I have owned the bike since new - bought it in Los Angeles and 3 days later rode it 6,000 miles back to PA to break it in :-) Generally, I wouldn't do this. In fact, I was planning to change the sprocket at about 40K miles or so, until I broke the head off one of the sprocket cover bolts, then broke an EZ-out off when trying to extract said bolt. At that point, I just got dumb and lazy and left it on. I finally decided I've pushed it far enough and resorted to the old hacksaw. See above - I was, when I bought it, only replacing a sprocket with about 40K miles on it. Now that I have 84K on it, I doubt it would matter WHAT sprocket I put on it, as I don't see it getting more than about 40K more before I get a new bike.
  5. Here's a pic of my just-removed front sprocket after 82K miles. This is what happens when a bolt snaps, then an extractor snaps trying to remove said snapped bolt. Then the STM gets lazy and just leaves it there. Surprisingly, I think it looks pretty good. As a side note, I didn't notice any decrease in life of chains that I've put on. I put the new one next to it for comparison.
  6. I'm a moron - thanks to all who replied with suggestions, but the only thing I needed was to be told it's an ID10T error. I was trying to put the upper bearing in the lower bearings spot :icon_redface: :icon_banghead: I guess all I really needed was that beer with dinner :-) Thanks again!!! I'm in the process of putting in my All Balls tapered steering bearings. I'm at the "install lower bearings" part of the process. In trying to get the bearings down, I can't even get them over the ridge that's below the 2 sets of threads on the steering stem. I didn't want to start banging away if I'm doing something wrong. So the question is - SHOULD I just be banging away? I will be using the 1 1/4" ID pipe method. I guess I'll be working on the fork rebuild until I hear from someone. Thanks!!
  7. Hi All, I just did a quick search of the archives and didn't find this info. Does anyone know if a 2000 shield would fit a 98? I know the 97's and 98's share a part number, and the 02's & 03's share a pn. 99-01 all have unique PN's. I ask because I'm cheap and there's a 2000 screen on e-bay that I'd bid on if it would fit. My odd part request is.... does anyone have a front sprocket cover lying around? You know - the piece that the clutch slave cylinder mounts to. Don't ask why I need that - it's a long story . Thanks! Tom
  8. I'm almost up to 82K miles on my 98 with the original clutch. I'm hoping you only WANT a new clutch, not NEED it.
  9. Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'll skip the Gold valves due to $$ and the fact that I'll never miss them, since I don't usually ride that hard. I have all the part numbers, so you don't have to go digging - thanks though! I'll add the crush washers to my list, too. As for the advice - you sure you want to make that offer? It's my first fork job Thanks to all respondants! If you have more thoughts, keep them coming Tom
  10. Hi all, Sort-of newbie to the list here. I searched through the archives and have decided that I'm going to go with a set of RaceTec 1 Kg springs to replace my stockers. I'm also going to replace the steering head bearings at the same time with some All Balls tapered bearings. Now for the questions: Here's the list of things I'm planning on replacing when I do the springs (descriptions from the Honda fiche): Fork seal set O-Ring Bush Guide Ring Backup Ring Are there any of these things that don't need to be replaced? Should I replace any other fork internal parts while it's apart? Any tips or tricks I should know before I begin? What's the consensus for fork oil weight (I'm 195# without gear)? I do have the shop manual, and it's a 98 with almost 82K miles. I'm strictly a street rider, but I do like to tour on my bird. Thanks in advance for any suggestions! Tom
  11. I have a stock 98 and have never noticed any rough idle outside of cold winter starts. Once it warms up (about 30 seconds - 1 min in the cold, about 10-20 seconds in the summer), it's nice and smooth. I think the longest stretch my bike has ever sat is about 3 weeks. Clean the carbs and check the plugs, maybe not even in that order. Tom
