  1. It's been a while but my friend's Ducati shop figured out the no-start problem: bad voltage regulator/rectifier. Dissimilar to the failures we see on the BB (my first one included). After running the new RR for a while the problem has not returned. Cheers, Rod
  2. Thanks tomek, I've searched the Ducati forums to no avail. They seem to break down lots of other ways but not in this particular way. I simply don't know enough about electrical/electronic wizardry to be of much help to my friend on this one. That's why I ride a '97 BB: Honda reliability, baby! (except for the RR and cam-chain lifter ) I'll post up if-and-when I find an answer for this. Cheers, Rod
  3. Hey All, I was discussing an electrical problem with a friend/coworker of mine and I told him I'd post it here 'cause you guys know just about everything that's important in life, including Italian motorcycle quirks I know this isn't BB related but it's an interesting problem so here goes: He has a new (June) 2007 Ducati Multistrada S that has an intermittent electrical problem. Occasionally, after a ride (long or short), he will turn off the bike. When he tries to restart it nothing happens except for the electric fuel pump activating to prime the system. The dash displays nothing. Last time this happened he checked the battery with his multimeter: 12 volts. If he allows the bike to sit for a while it will fire up with no hesitation. His local Duck dealer is not resolving this problem; they had his bike for three weeks and found nothing. He is riding it now but does not turn off the motor until he arrives back home. Thanks for any light you can shed on this matter. Cheers, Rod
  4. I had my first '97 XX rear-ended out from under me last year. The replacement '97 came with the stock windscreen and a Secdem unit that kicks ass. Paired with the VFR bars it's a nice comfy set-up. Cheers, Rod
  5. Hey All, Had the Bird out for a ride today... first of the season! Everything seemed normal except for a high pitched whine that increased with speed. This sound could be heard when I stretched my neck to put my head into the clean air above the windscreen turbelence. With my chin on the tank the noise was absent (maybe it was masked by the air flowing past the screen). Also, the noise was present only with the engine under load (pulling-in the clutch lever and bipping the throttle couldn't reproduce it). 39000 kms, new chain (EK530ZVX2) and sprockets (Honda OEM) were installed last year, about 6000 km ago. Chain tension is within spec. The chain I replaced was DID. Is this just a noisy EK (didn't really notice the noise last season) or something expensive? Oh yeah, lubed the chain before storage last year and relubed before today's ride. Had a relatively long warm-up around town before hitting the highways. Any ideas? Thanks, Rod
  6. Thanks ironmike, I'll give that a try. I was getting worried that I'd have to polish the frame, add spinner wheels and apply a natty covering of leopard skin on the bodywork  Cheers, Rod
  7. Hey Everyone, I was getting the Bird ready for the riding season and I dropped a wrench on the frame. Damn it!!! Anyone know of a paint or similar product to match Honda's frame treatment? Thanks, Rod
  8. Thanks Peter, That's great info. Cheers, Rod
  9. Hobicus, SWEET avatar... damn, I can't stop staring! It's hypnotic! I think you're right. I pulled the rr and found a 1/2 inch crack on the rubber face. I normally ride in the dry but yesterday's Friday 13 in Port Dover was a soaker. Maybe it's time for a replacement. Thanks for replying, Rod
  10. Hello everyone, I'm a brand-spanking new member (this is my first post) who's been the proud owner of a '97 for two months now. Talk about the PERFECT bike to get me back into street riding! So, there I was this afternoon cruising @ 4000 rpm when the speedo and tach both dropped to zero. The engine hiccupped then started losing power. A couple of backfires then nothing. Dead. I started to check the fuses and found that the main (30 amp) fuse was toast. Replaced it and watched it blow again after two minutes of highway speed. Replaced again and decided to rev the engine: blown fuse as the tach climbed above 3500-4000 rpm. Dammit! Had to limp home @ 2200 rpm on the backroads. Anyone have some insight? Cheers, Rod
