Voltage spike query

RXX

Recommended Posts

For the last 3 days my voltage has spiked, up to 16+ VDC in an erratic manner. My RD squeals, my radar screamer screams and lights up, the RD shows HI V message, and my digital voltmeter confirms the spike. I have scrambled to put some load on, and have found that energizing my heated grips pulls it down to normal-ish levels.

It only does it at speed (I think) and certainly is WNL at idle. I am on my second regulator, this one is not the stock '99, IIRC. I have a spare yammy replacement.

What say you?

They all fail sooner or later. I just put a new alternator in Peggy's 2008 V6 Mustang on Tuesday.....93,XXX miles on it. One of the diodes failed, the voltage spiked and smoked the less than three year old battery, which was of course just a few months past the free replacement time.

Fucking POS Honda.

...damn thing probably only has 1.5 million miles on it, and it's already starting to fail!

sigh, no, more like 78,000 and this might be the second one, I do not remember. I know I have replaced the stator.

Mr. EVLXX,

That is a really neat website. In fact, it makes me want to do a replacement as-soon-as-possible. (I have some eclectrical gremins starting). Have you done this operation? Do you have any pictures or personal commentary to add?

I did my own stator last summer, and I'm feeling lucky!

It's almost broken-in.

Yes... In this thread are some of my install pictures...

Note I first tried to go the cheap route and bought a used R1 R/R... however, when I got the new R/R from Roadstercycle, it bolted right up.

Eric, I am going to go ahead & get one for Mohammedmas. I am guessing from the catalog the roadster crimp & go is a universal fit?

Would advise getting the LED voltage monitor from http://www.roadstercycle.com/ as well. Damn it adds peace of mind----really works great. I wired it in using a relay so I could get a good power keyed power source.

My digital voltmeter is what clued me in to the problem to begin with. A day or two after I had gotten back from a 2,000-ish mile trip.

It also gave me advance warninig when my stator went tits up. Yes, worth the money and trouble to install.
