WTB 2000 or later titanium or redbird pref

Sierra, an Aermacchi sounds like a tinkerer's dream come true. You probably have your own machine shop. Good for you for keeping that antique bike in running condition. Presumably. Of course, if it's a piece of decor, then all you have to do is dust it.

Do you have any photos of your titanium Bird, perhaps including a bikini babe or two? (The photo would still qualify as moto porn without the babes.)

10K miles is way low, but that doesn't mean that it's been neglected. You'd know by now if it hadn't been stored properly.

Aermacchi

Is that what we called a Sprint here in the States?

250 CC single cylinder. The cylinder stuck forward, and often hit anything just behind the front wheel.

If so, then I spent a few years of my youth abusing and repairing one.

I never figured out the compression release, and went over the handle bars many times trying to start it.

Youth and stupidity caused me many a bruise.  But it was a fun ride back in the day.

Ken...It's pretty close to perfect.  There was s scratch on the rear grab rail...which I replace with a new one.   There is a couple of minor scratches on the mirrors, which mostly polished out and there is one small scratch on the front fender...which I was planning to have repainted.  It has a small scratch on the stator cover of which I have a new cover to replace.  It now has a MRA Touring screen on it.   Here are pics of the day I brought it home.

...and the Redbird...just because

Wow, both of those birds rawk! I doubt that I could find another titanium '02 in that condition any time soon, if ever.

I see that it has a 4-into-1 exhaust. I presume that it's a full Yosh system. The carbon end can looks great and the system probably saves a good bit or weight.

Sorry about the following questions. Feel free to tell me to fek off as needed and no harm done.

Does the pipe include an O2 sensor?

Does it have a power commander or similar?

Are there any related intake changes, like maybe to the airbox or injectors?

Was it tuned by a pro, maybe with a dyno?

Is there a baffle in the end can?

Is it loud "AF"?

Does it seem to run rich or lean?

Does it run hot?

Do you get any pinging or backfires?

Is the gearing stock?

Was the mod done  done because of a crash?

I doubt that I need more than stock power. I'd prefer all-stock, to be honest, but in this case, I'm definitely interested. Thanks again for the photos and info.

I can answer some of your questions and give you an idea of what you can expect.  On my '01 I went from all stock exhaust to a Yosh 4-1, and back to stock, the only mod on the bike was a K&N filter.  With the Yosh it lost low RPM power to around 4k, then above 6k it gained more than I thought it would.  It wasn't crazy loud, no more than any other sport bike with a full length performance muffler.  Slip-on mufflers with the stock header would theoretically add some high end power without loosing low end like the Yosh did.  My current BB is a '97 with slip-ons and altho I never did a back to back test with the other bike my gut says that the theory on slip-ons is probably accurate.

The weight of the whole Yosh system was about equal to one stock muffler.  The two slip-on mufflers I have now probably weigh less than one stocker.

What Superhawk said.

Yes it is a full 4 into 1.

Does the pipe include an O2 sensor?   Not sure, but I don't think so, I'll check

Does it have a power commander or similar?:  Yes.  PCIII

Are there any related intake changes, like maybe to the airbox or injectors? Does not appear so.

Was it tuned by a pro, maybe with a dyne?   Not sure, the bike came with it installed.

Is there a baffle in the end can?  No baffle

Is it loud "AF"?  Nope.  As Superhawk indicated no louder than any other 4 cylinder full system.  It sounds great and I prefer the sound over the slip-on with Redbike...but the OCD in me likes symmetry so I am staying with that setup on it.

Does it seem to run rich or lean?  Nope.  Runs like normal

Does it run hot?  No hotter than normal.  It shows the same temps as the Redbike which has the slip-ons to the OEM Header so I would say normal.

Do you get any pinging or backfires? Nope.

Is the gearing stock?  Have not counted the teeth, but it appears to be OEM .

Was the mod done  done because of a crash?  There is no evidence of a crash.  I checked it pretty closely before purchase.  I've had all the panels off and can find no indications.

Super and Sierra, thanks much for the great info. The silver Bird sounds, er, better than ever. My old Gen1 FZ1 had that same "tuned for top-end" feel, and it too had an aftermarket end can. The bit of extra clutch slipping around town must not have bothered me much, because I put 48k on clock before I sold it, end can still present. So, Sierra, where you at? With a name like yours, I'm thinking Bishop or Lake Tahoe, CA.

There's gold in them thar hills!

I hope that the smoke and fires are moving away from El Dorado, Sierra. Our family vacationed in Tahoe and Yosemite in the summer of 2019. It's no wonder that the natives revered those places. I can't wait to ride up there one day.

Sierra, if you decide to sell, I'd be honored to give your Bird a warm nest and regular floggings. Feel free to text me at 919-413-3118.

Just to be clear, it didn't become a dog at low end and I never felt the need to slip the clutch more or do anything obviously different while riding, but doing back to back runs from low RPM up an onramp I was able to feel the change.  Somewhere around here is a post about the test back when it was fresher in my mind.

I like the look & sound of duals more than a single and while I liked the performance and the fun sound of a sporty exhaust, I also like being able to blast in the stealthier mode so I went back to stock and sold the Yosh.  My current Bird has Two Brothers slip-ons and the noise level is about on par with the Yosh, but being dual I'm not as inclined to want to go stock.  Plus they look great with the other mods on the bike.

That's good to know, Super. My FZ wasn't all that bad either. In-town manners were it's weak point mainly because the rest of the bike was so good. Duallies might be preferable but the state of tune is my biggest concern. Sierra's bike isn't overdone.

Do folks upgrade their suspensions on the XX? The fz had a pretty amazing suspension. Penske shock and fork internals rebuilt to match by Traxxion Dynamics. Slightly stiff, but great turn-in and rebound.

Yup.  The first step is usually stiffer front springs matched to the rider's weight, sometimes combined with a fork oil change, I think 7.5wt is the go-to.  Then fork valving mods.  A stiffer rear spring for heavier riders or people carrying cargo or a passenger frequently.  Then revalve or replace the rear shock.  A few have gone crazy with inverted forks and other cool stuff.

I put stiffer springs and low-end ohlins shocks on my '94 CB1000 (RIP). I felt like a real Wrench for a minute there. Made a big difference, despite the "tuned-flex" frame. Glad to hear to hear that Bird owners sometimes go that route.

Carbs have been trouble-free for me, except for my old Hawk GT. I can live without another attempted carb rebuild.

I prefer the simplicity of FI, as long as it's done right. One common fault with literbike FI is on-throttle surge, which can be annoying, particularly in corners. Does the XX FI suffer from that malady?

I do prefer the titanium color. No offense intended.

There's a touch of a flat spot in the fueling curve, and you can hit a specific point if you try where it's not smooth.  But it's certainly not abrupt in any way and is easy to ride fast and accelerate out of corners with no drama at all.

Mine was a 2000.  I spent a day in a dyno room tuning out the very minor problem and tweaking top end power.  We confirmed the slight lean spot using the dyno, and added fuel.  It really was tiny though, and maybe I just got lucky to occasionally want the throttle and RPM at just exactly the place that makes it noticeable.  Either way though, it's not something I would have spent money to fix at all.  The dyno day and the programmer were free, so they could use my bike for testing.
