A: Yes, 2 quarts of 5w30 mixed with 2 quarts of 15w50 = 10w40. The brand of car oil that I was using was OK for motorcycle clutches in 10w40 but the other weights were not so mixing wouldn't work in my case. If I wasn't so cheap and just bought bike oil, I wouldn't have to think about these things.

Every time you change the oil you have a long dry start. A new filter passes more junk than one that's a little bit plugged up. According to 'experts' in the field when new oil is put in the cleaning/lubricating additives have a small battle 'till a balance is restored. This may be more of an issue when switching oil types, dunno. Also, every oil change opens the possibility of getting a bad filter, getting a bad batch of oil, making a mistake. I know they're probably 1 in a million type things, but why remove something that's still good to replace it with a new one. It would be like changing air filters every 5k, or replacing the battery every year just in case. Excessive oil changes are one of those 'feel good' things many do that might actually be worse than waiting 'till it's actually time. And it's obviously worse for the environment. CBRXX
I was using the Rotella T6 5w40 in the bird, starts smooth when cold. Last time I used the Castrol bike oil https://smile.amazon.com/Castrol-10W-40-Synthetic-Motorcycle-Bottle/dp/B008MISDH4/
superhawk996
I read a long ass write up by some oil specialist about gas engine oils and what I took away from it was to use 0-40 Pennzoil platinum in damn near everything. The Rotella T-6, in my mind, would also fall under the category of one size fits almost all. Lots of people on the Cherokee forum are using T-6 and oil analysis are coming back very good. SwampNut
On the topic of frequent oil changes, it goes along with my general view of the common myth of doing something under the premise, "What could it hurt?" That's right up there with "worst case scenario." There's always a worser case, and there's always a possibility for something to have horrible unintended and unpredictable consequences. I don't believe any action is without a consequence of some sort. I guess I'm an ultimate believer in the butterfly effect and general entropy.
