99' bird with 65K so I'm thinking this winter might be time to have a look at valves. I stop at the Honda shop and ask if anyone has adjusted valves on a Blackbird.

I get a somewhat blank look and he asks me what brand bike is that. I'm not kidding. Then I find out the oldest guy in the shop was born in 82'.

It takes the service manager more than a half hour of looking at books so I leave and have them mail me an estimate, here it is.

I can do it myself 'if' I can get shims.

For people who I think are NOT in the know I use CBR 1100XX instead of Blackbird but I know, you were in a Honda shop.

I should peek at mine but haven't.

Industry standard 7.48 mm Dia. shims. Irrc. They are widely available. Many other brands of mcycle use those plus there is aftermarket like Hotcams or K&L.

The nice thing about Honda OEM shim is the fact they available in 0.025 mm steps unlike aftermarket- 0.05mm.

So if you are anal about engines like I am go with Honda OEM shims.

I always like to get valve clearances as close as possible.  The OEM window, let's say 0.13-0.19 mm or 0.06 mm spread, is not good enough for me. I'd like to get them to within 0.01-0.02 mm.

I know I'm late to the party, but for both for the Honda F4i and another for the Kawi ZX6, 2 separate local dealers were willing  to swap out the shims I needed with ones I didnt as per an online valve clearance calculator(looks like JaBr has one), even steven, no questions asked. Neither valve inspection/adjustment cost me a dime.

As already mentioned, I'd measure first, maybe you wont even need any. I inspected the Speed Triple at the beginning of this season- deadnuts on.
