  1. It also keeps your battery from discharging, which it is doing at an alarming rate when you're at idle, and the fan is running. I put a manual switch on my 84 VFR1000 because the fan came on very late. It worked great on that bike, but I have so far no need for it on the XX. Oh, may I suggest you turn the bike off when at a long light, which I do often, or get yourself a carbed XX and it won't run as hot. good luck marty
  2. Check them carefully. It is possible to slip the pin back in, without the tab properly seated. Ask me how I know.

    Just got mine

How about an update. I agree that if your XX needs a steering damper, then something is wrong. If the tires were not brand new I would consider that first. The XX is bad for wierd tread wear (cupping) on the front tire. marty

    New Battery

****This is absolutely correct**** I advise everyone to take a good look at the numbers because it may significantly increase the draw from your charging system and shorten the life of the stator and R/R instead of the other way around. marty
  5. The Chain guard part snapped off and the Dealer wants about $80.00 Cdn for it. Before I hit the recycle places, (I know one that may have a nice one from a 97 lol) does enyone want to part with one for a few bucks? thanks marty
  6. Wish I had been checking here lately. I have one still in the bubble-pack on the shelf behind me. Let me know if you still need one ok Mike. marty
  7. Hate to state the obvious, but did you check to make sure those two bolts are torqued in well enough? It's not a HD but they will loosen up and even come out. Ask me how I know. lol marty
  8. I hope Joe chimes in soon, He would know for sure. The first thing I would check would be the clutch rod. Pull the primary gear cover and you'll see it right away. Make sure it's not gummed up and jammed in there. Good luck marty
  9. Seems to be holding fine, thanks for your help guys. I couldn't wait to fire it up to see if the regulator was ok. Nice to have a bike again. Still waiting for the wing rack.
  10. Just picked up the stator today and am ready to put the bike back together. I want it for tomorrow and rather not wait for the idiot to order me another. think this will work? marty

Hey Kevin Had an 18t on the 97 for most of last season. When I change the chain on the TI I'm putting another on. I loved it.

    GIVI mount

As a matter of fact Mike I did bring it up before, Ions ago when the 97 first developed cracks. I accepted that as part of life, but now I know in advance what's going to happen. You and Justin are most likely right and there's not much I can do about it, especially the way I overload those things all the time. I was just throwing it out there in case someone developed a miracle cure since then.

    GIVI mount

I've got the mount kit on order to install all three Givi bags on the 98. I'm going to use the old bags, and because now I'm forking out for a stator, I'll wait a bit before buying new lids. On the 97, the rear cowling developed cracks. I'm positive they were stress related from the weight of the bags. Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening on the 98? Thanks in advance guys marty
  14. Worry more about replacing the battery often and the stator and R/R will last forever. Many feel if a battery starts the bike, it must still be good. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The biggest load on a charging system is a weak battery. Either have them tested, or replace them every 3-4 years. You can't invest 25-33 bucks a year any better. Never charge a dead battery on the bike, and if a battery has been drained fully, test it even if it's new. marty
  15. Make sure you measure resistance with a DVM. An analog meter won't move enough for you to see it. Short the two leads together and note the reading. Then subtract that from the reading you get between the yellow wires. They should all be the same, about .6 ohms or so. Make sure you measure resistance to ground. There should be no continuity. Yes you can measure A/C from the yellow wires. The bike will run with the plug out. Can't recall the reading you should get, but if I remember correctly it's around 35 vac each. Maybe someone can clarify that for me. If your battery's not new, replace it or you'll burn everything out again. Good luck, I'm in need of a stator myself marty
  16. Unfortunately, if it’s the same one I downloaded, it’s for a fuel injected model. If someone does scan the carb pages, please post it up.
  17. I agree It is highly unlikely the windings will increase in resistance. They may open completely, or resistance will decrease, indicating shorted windings. The latter is more probable. The wire in the windings is coated with a lacquer. When the stator overheats this lacquer burns off and some off the wires begin to short together. Something to consider. When measuring resistance you’re using DC current and basically measuring a length of wire. This is why resistance is so low. Because the wire is wound in such a way to develop an EM field, the AC impedance is much greater. This means, to AC the resistance of the stator appears much higher. Even though these shorts don’t change the DC resistance much, it has drastic affects on the AC impedance and may actually look like a short.
  18. Although I didn't like the 45/46 and couldn't wait to get them off. I'd be willing to give these a try. Looks like they tried to address a lot of the problems the old AVs had. Always interested in new tire technologies.
  19. I don't even know if my horn works. Never use it.
  20. You know, It would be too easy to design a crowbar cct withing the R/R that would totally isolate and protect the Stator and R/R from an excessive load. My guess is that Honda just loves selling Stators and Regulators, so why spend even a few extra pennies not to.
  21. Uh huh... Then pay up the wahzoo trying to get the EPA'd... Trying being the key word here. exactly Heavy sigh... We've been through this before. The new models are virtually unchanged from the 2003 model. Still a few in crates around I think and tons of super low mileage beauties to be found for really good deals. By the time you get an import on the road you can have yourself a nice ZX and thensome.
  22. Wow, thanks for the pics because I couldn't view them from work. What's really an eye opener is that the highest concentration between the 4 of Moly is is the M1 MX4T. The M1 15-50, which I was led to believe had very little, is the second highest. Too bad the Honda oil isn't there. Awesome post, thank you.
