That last video has a bike that's not a chopper. It was going to fast for a good screen capture. Anyone think they can ID it?

The older we get the faster it becomes :)

it still wheel stands when I hit 2nd gear full throttle and the front end gets quite light when hitting third. A little pull on the bars and the front wheel would definitely come off the ground in third. Scary-fast for me. :)

Perhaps the fuel valve fix also fixed a vacuum leak?

I've only had a FI Bird, so don't know all the plumbing on a Carb Bird.

    Could very well be.

I also replaced the vacuum line with a longer one. The existing line was brittle and a bit too short so always difficult to get it connected to the tank.

On another note, sure the XX is 25 years old, many bikes are much more powerful, lighter and faster.

But the XX is still a scary-fast machine.

    And sexy!! :)

  4. I rode my XX yesterday. I was surprised how easy it started. Normally it will sputter for a while when first started and the choke on. It smoothed out almost immediately to a nice even idle. It ran very smooth and very strong.

Again, I'm not sure why but is definitely running smoother and more powerful.

  5. I have 1 Kobalt utility knife in the kitchen junk drawer and one in the garage at each house. Easy blade replacement. And the Stanley blades.

  6. I just took the bike out for a  run, ran it up to 140. Maybe it's my imagination but it seems to run smoother and stronger. The cleaning of the tank and the new filter may have something to do with it. I don't know if the diaphragm not functioning properly would have had any effect.

Now  to lube the chain and wax the bike.

Thanks for the video and all the other posts with info. And thanks to everyone else who provided help.

Because I wasn't sure what the problem was, the next morning I took the tank to the local MC shop. They came to the same conclusion and replaced the parts.

They charged me the same prices that I saw online and only $25 for their labor. They got the genuine Honda parts quite quickly and no shipping charges.

They also replaced the filter which I was unaware of until I saw the video you provided.

Even if the diaphragm is working, the hoses stay full of gas so they could leak whatever's in them.

I pulled the tank off the bike with the petcock valve in the closed position. The minute I opened the valve gas flowed out, which it is not supposed open unless pulled by vacuum.

Gas also flowed out this bottom nozzle, which doesn't connect to anything and is never supposed to do.

  9. There was what I thought was an oil spot on the garage floor under my XX last week after I rode it. Upon research it seems its leaking gas and that has washed residue oil with it as it dripped to the floor. I can't determine exactly where the gas is coming from. I pulled the tank off and the right side gas connection is leaking gas. Isn't the gas valve only supposed to open when there is a vacuum. It appears the diaphragm is leaking.

Anyone have an experience like this?

Did you notice what appears to be cameras next to the right turn signal on the first two blue bikes.

They also appear to have LED turn signals.

I did find these on ebay, may be the same

I google the year and model along with "problems" or similar words.  You'll typically see only the bad stuff.

There are plenty of sites where people post reviews of vehicles grading the good and bad of each.

Same here. Go to the forums of the vehicles you are interested in and search for the problems.

A number of years ago when my Audi S8 transmission was having shifting issues I did a bunch of searches and finally found the problem and solution on the BMW forum. BMWs use the same transmission which, according to Audi isn't supposed to require any type of service. According to BMW the transmission should be serviced and new fluid and filter installed at 75,000 miles. I had the transmission serviced and problem solved.

When I bought the S8 I knew about the air suspension issues as well as possible intake manifold issue. Nothing on the Audi sites mentioned the transmission. I think that is because on the BMW site some of the cars are more performance oriented and the owners are much harder on the transmissions.

What I also discovered is the the ZF 6HP transmission can be also found in certain models of Bentley, Astin Martin, Jaguar, Ford/Lincoln, Maserati, Kia, Hyundai and Land Rover.

So if your concerned about the turbocharger, find out who makes them and what other vehicles carry them. Borg Warner makes oem turbochargers for both Ford and Chevy trucks.

Keep in mind that it is frequently more difficult to get honest and unbiased reviews of things online.  Most sources shill for one party or another.

And that does not just apply to vehicle reviews.

Keep that in mind the next time you choose to post something you found on the internet.

Examples of the "many, many models of them ...crapping up, requiring modification, or end up being a maintenance headache"?  I've not heard of widespread systemic engine issues that are unique to forced-induction engines available in the consumer market.  If they were so horrible, manufacturers wouldn't warranty them for as long as an NA engine.

Maintenance on a turbo car is no different than any other car.  It is more important to do it on schedule and with quality materials, but no different.  Please provide an example of turbo engine maintenance that differs from a naturally-aspirated engine.

You're doing what you do, dreaming up barriers and excuses.  All of your assertions in this thread have been irrational, unfounded, and easily disproven by the millions of turbo cars on the road today.

We've had two turbocharged Audi A4s with no problems, one with well over 100,000 miles.

I talked to my friend who owns an import car repair business and he told me they have dealt with a few turbo failures.

He said it tends to boil down to two issues:

    1. Maintenance. Changing the oil every 5,000 miles with good quality synthetic oil and filter. Cars will come in for turbo issues with 15,000-20,000 miles since the last oil change, (if they even know when the last oil change was) low oil level, oil leaks. He said it looks like some cars have never had their oil filter changed.

2: overheating the turbo. You can't just run the car at high speeds generating a lot of turbo heat and then shut the engine off. Also let it warm up a bit before taking off, give the oil a chance to circulate. He said he's not seen a case where the turbo failure was a manufacturer issue on original equipment. He said that's probably because if they are going to fail through manufacturer defect they fail under warrantee.

Most turbo failure he's dealt with are from young guys that beat the piss out of the engine playing Ricky racer.

    That's his experience.

  14. Sorry to hear this.

It always amazes me when it is quite obvious someone has a weight/health problem but refuse to do anything about it.

One of my wife's friends is extremely overweight. My wife has tried to help her diet and get on a healthy exercise routine but to no avail. Her friend will start on a diet but immediately modify it to suit her needs (so she says) Which means it is no longer a weight-loss diet. She starts by listing all the foods she refuses to give up which includes all the cokes she drinks every day. And she loves to cook and she loves pasta. She keeps getting bigger and bigger.

Oh, and she's pissed because the company she works for requires her to pay a higher insurance premium because of her health.

  15. This morning I weighed 185.6, down from 195.3.  That's just short of 10 lbs in one month.

Except for my morning coffee I cut out all sugar. When I say I cut out sugar I realize there is sugar in fruits, but there is no other sugar that I consume. I have my dinner size meal at around 4:00 pm which consists of chicken, salad  and sometimes brown & wild rice. After that if I feel hungry I eat an apple and maybe a Wasa Swedish style whole grain Crispbread cracker which is only 30 calories. The cracker seems to satisfy any hunger issues.

Sometimes I have the Cripsbread cracker with a small slice on Monterey Jack cheese. Delicious!!

    That statement is ludicrous.

People can gain weight after developing sleep apnea, but they are normally overweight in the first place.

As the medical community learns more about sleep apnea, several important links to excess body weight are emerging. Not only can excess weight cause sleep apnea, but it can worsen the symptoms and exacerbate its detrimental health effects. Insufficient sleep may also lead to weight gain, making it a vicious cycle. Encouragingly, many studies show that weight loss improves sleep apnea. If you are struggling with sleep apnea or excess weight, it’s important to understand the complex interactions between the two conditions.

How Excess Weight Causes Sleep Apnea

Several health conditions increase the likelihood of developing sleep apnea, but OSA is most common in people who are overweight or obese. Excess weight creates fat deposits in a person’s neck called pharyngeal fat. Pharyngeal fat can block a person’s upper airway during sleep when the airway is already relaxed. This is why snoring is one of the most common sleep apnea symptoms — air is literally being squeezed through a restricted airway, causing a loud noise.

Additionally, increased abdominal girth from excess fat can compress a person’s chest wall, decreasing lung volume. This reduced lung capacity diminishes airflow, making the upper airway more likely to collapse during sleep. OSA risk continues to increase with a rising body mass index(BMI), which measures one’s body fat based on height and weight. Even a 10% weight gain is associated with a six-fold increase in OSA risk.

Less common causes of sleep apnea include enlarged tonsils that block the airway, anatomical features such as a large neck or narrow throat, endocrine disorders (including diabetes and thyroid disease), acid reflux, lung diseases, and heart problems. However, roughly 60–90% of adults with OSA are overweight.

Can Sleep Apnea Cause Weight Gain?

While excess weight has long been known to be a risk factor for OSA, an increasing amount of evidence suggests the relationship is reciprocal. This is because sleep deprivation is associated with decreased leptin (an appetite-suppressing hormone) and increased ghrelin (an appetite-stimulating hormone), which may increase cravings for calorie-dense foods. Additional data indicates that insufficient sleep leads to overeating, obesity, and a decrease in fat-loss during calorie restriction.

It also appears that OSA patients, in particular, may be more susceptible to weight gain than people who have the same BMI and health status but do not suffer from sleep apnea. This is illustrated in one study that showed people with OSA gained significantly more weight (around 16 pounds ) in the year leading up to their OSA diagnosis compared with BMI-matched people without OSA.

Sleep apnea can also deplete people of the energy they need to maintain a healthy body weight. Daytime sleepiness is a common sleep apnea symptom, resulting from fragmented, unrefreshing sleep. Excessive sleepiness may lead sleep apnea sufferers to exert less physical activity during waking hours. This may be particularly problematic for obese people, who frequently experience more shortness of breath and chest discomfort with physical effort, resulting in limited exercise. Without dietary changes, decreased activity levels can lead to additional weight gain.
