  1. thanks for the tape tip! were i doing a bit more distance riding than the once or twice a year i currently do, i'd surely be able to spring for the hard cases.
  2. it's a great design, just should be done in metal. nothing like having a lockable trunk! one could buy the mounting lug kits and simply cut out and replace the wear prone plastic post. my through bolt solution, while taking away the ability to press a button to remove the box (i simply go inside the box to remove a nut), has been secure for many years now.
  3. looks good! just gotta remember to keep tools handy in case the seat has to come off...
  4. if your givi mounting plate is plastic, keep a close eye on the rear latching post. over time, mine wore to the point my box self-jettisoned on the freeway on rainy day... feel the edge where the box latches onto, towards the rear of the mounting plate. if it's starting to round off, consider adding a small bolt through box and mounting plate to keep things secure.

    kinked tube

thanks for the hint, craig. hadn't looked at the part diagrams yet, i think it #9 here; http://www.ronayers.com/oemparts/a/hon/506c1ffbf870023420a2f606/oil-pump if that's the case, less worrying as it's a return tube. kinda strange, the lower end is held in place by a stay plate but, there doesn't appear to be anything similar on the upper end.

    kinked tube

while doing the pair delete and changing spark plugs (i now realize i coulda left the lowers on...), i noticed this. appears to be an oil tube, perhaps 30-40% restricted with that kink. should i be concerned? is this something that can easily be replaced? it's not clear how the tube attaches on the upper end. i also see a slight bend to the lower right corner of the radiator. this poor bike musta had a pretty hard down on the right side. on a perhaps related note, i've had the oil analyzed (pdf report attached below) and there's a bit of copper indicating wear of a bushing or bearing. could it be a flow restriction here is causing accelerated wear somewhere downstream? bummer, when i "upgraded" i just traded one set of issues for another, ha ha! 01 CRB 1100XX-081416.pdf
  7. thanks for all the posts. i had good results with 2 layers of masking tape last time the saddlebags were on the bike, tape came right off and left no residue. might do 3 layers for a longer rider though...
  8. damn these shiny $3k bikes, making mine look overpriced... http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/mcy/5699414844.html
  9. little update. i installed some dry-break fuel line connectors and had a look at the air cleaner... nasty! a bit surprising as the rest of the bike was in such good condition but, perhaps not so much as what a pain in the butt to remove the tank without those connectors. air filter's on order but, a good vacuuming and shake out seemed to help. o2 sensor's gone and that's helped noticeably with the low end throttle response and smoothness. front end actually got some air time as i entered the freeway in 2nd... got a decent deal on a pc3 so that should be on in a few weeks. i'll report back as i knock off these bike chores.
  10. post up or search the classifieds here; http://www.klr650.net/
  11. that's right, silverbird. they're in the mid-pipe just upstream of the cans. my '01 has remus slip-ons that are a bit rough (scratched) from old downs. i'm wondering how much of that scratching could be buffed out. i'm going to try the o2 sensor delete, have the plug on order. as i recall, only a few places to get non-ethanol locally so that's not a very practical option for me.
  12. thanks for that explanation. i was under the impression that 87 was ok to use in all birds and then noticed this sticker.
  13. holy crap! i've been using the wrong fuel! i'll report back after a tank or 2 of the recommended 91 octane... i found no such label on the 2000. i was under the mistaken impression all birds could be run on 87.
  14. redbird might be on to something, the seller (owner #2) told me the original owner was a long-time bay area resident. wonder if the cams are different? yikes! for the 1st time in my motorcycling life, i'm about to be stepping down...
  15. well blackhawkxx, the mystery deepens... both bikes have 17 tooth front sprockets. both bikes have rear sprockets that are marked "45" - this (17/45) is stock. i remember replacing chain & sprockets on the 2000 blackbird and ordered sprockets for stock gearing along with the chain. here's where it gets tricky... i counted 3 times and my wife, twice. the sprocket on the 2000 blackbird that's marked "45" actually has 44 teeth. the 2001 redbird has 45 teeth. just as it's marked. given i've now confirmed the sprocket counts and ruled out externals like dragging brakes (wheels on both bike spin freely) or low air pressure (both bikes are about 40 psi front & rear), it really does seem like the poor shiny 2001 redbird is indeed down on power compared to the 2000 "matte"bird. per the wikipedia page here (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_CBR1100XX) it appears '02 and on birds have different f.i. mapping and lower output figures. another thing i found unusual; the redbird came with stock pipes that have catalytic converters (externally, the mid-pipes are fatter and you can see the catalyst inside - it looks like corrugated cardboard rolled up). i thought these were only on r.o.w. (rest of world) bikes, not u.s. ones. also, the ecu threw a code for the oxygen sensor once a couple of weeks ago (not since), something that's only supposed to apply to catalyst bikes. am i mistaken that no catalyst bikes came to the u.s.? might my 2001 redbird be r.o.w.? i'm hoping a buddy who rides and i trust will show up so we can do some head to head "testing"... hint, hint: anyone here on the forum local to san jose? i'd love to find out before i sell the 2000... if there's some old thread that answers all i seek, please feel free to hit me over the head with it...
  16. i want to learn about why my beat up old 2000 blackbird feels so much quicker than my 2001 redbird. the 2000 would often surprise me by lofting the front end on power alone while i have yet to experience this on my 2001. i'd assumed both have stock gearing (similar rpm's at 70mph) until i counted the teeth on the rear sprockets. 45 on the redbird, 44 on the blackbird. i'd have to remove the cover to count the teeth on the fronts. assuming both have stock front sprockets and equal power, the redbird should feel quicker, correct? as far as i know, the 2000's stock. the 2001 has remus slip-ons but, appears otherwise stock. i've read in a few craigslist ads that the later bikes had the power restricted in the lower gears. can anyone confirm this? anything else to help enlighten me? i get the feeling i really need to confirm the size of the front sprockets...
  17. upon inspection of my new to me 2001 red bird, i notice there are no heat shields between the pads and pistons in the fronts. the back did have them. on-line, it seems ebc pads (i believe the current pads are ebc) come with them but, most others do not. honda seems to sell them with the pads as they're not listed as a separate part. do you think these are required? i've ridden the bike for almost a month as is. if anyone has 4 of these they'd like to sell or knows where to get them without buying a set of pads, i'm interested. on a related note, it appears honda replaced the little screw that covers the hole atop the pad retaining pin with a rubber plug. my 2000 has the screw, the 2001 a plug. take a look at the diagram. part# 15 is not listed in the parts descriptions, but it shows # 24 (described as a plug) next to it in the diagram. anyone here had # 17 the pad retaining pin back out? i know part# 15's sometimes a bitch to remove, especially with the muffler in the way. here's a link to the diagram & parts list from my local honda shop; http://shop.gpsportsonline.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=6766342&category=Motorcycles&make=Honda&year=2001&fveh=251892
  18. furbird's solution sounds like what i had to do on my mercedes. instead of wood, i used a piece of pvc with a notched end to fit the bottom of the window and zip tied it to the broken regulator.
  19. wish i could take credit for this but, here's how a bird rider from hungary did it.
  20. i was afraid someone would say; "wash her"... it's a testament to honda engineering, i've done very little to her since my stewardship began other than oil changes and replacing consumables... perhaps i should search or start a new thread but, why does this one feel so much quicker than the '01 redbird that's in much nicer condition?
  21. here's a link to my craigslist ad. bike is in the south s.f. bay area. i'm open to offers and will work with a motivated buyer, especially a forum brother or sister. i also have a few accessories in another ad and might be tempted to throw some in to sweeten the deal.2000 honda cbr1100xx blackbird
  22. i believe the seller just made a deal... i'll be sure to share any others i come across locally.
  23. mine have been sold but, passing this along from my local craigslist;http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/mpo/5646999104.htmlcan't beat that price!
  24. by the way, i'm with a group riding to twin lakes near bridgeport in july if anyone would like to tag along. we go over sonora and return via tioga typically, spending saturday night here; http://www.monovillage.com/ the vfr bars are sold but, i still have the gen-mar risers. i've updated the craigslist ad.
