  1. Same conundrum for me, except the bed is out (Excursion, and that's MY bed).  A hitch hauler was nearly perfect for what I did for a long time, even with the 990ADV.  But now there are at least two bikes.

The self-leveling would be an amazing benefit whichever way you go.  But Tom makes the likely accurate observation that no matter which one is on the carrier, it's the other one you'll want to use.  You'll be motherfucking that choice every time you have to drop the hitch hauler bike to get to the one in the bed.  Rivian may not have a place at the table yet in terms of aftermarket support, but there are those bed extenders that double as a ramp and work pretty well.  I may actually have one from a GMC if you want to try to retrofit it.

Final answer though - I'm with Tim. Though it is an additional piece of equipment to register, maintain, store, etc... it's just the best answer.  I'm slowly coming around to it myself, and it's painful because I like a simple, self-contained one-piece unit.  But it isn't simple anymore (or... again).  And that's okay, the benefits largely outweigh the negatives, just have to adapt.

  2. Oh, damn.  I wish he'd have called me, I drive by his street at least 3 days a week.  Now that Jeff is working at that repair shop, he should take it there for stuff that's beyond my experience level.  Other than mounting and balancing a tire (not worth the effort), I would have done all of that for a couple beers and the cost of parts.

Those Impalas are actually pretty decent cars, I had one as a unit and I liked it.

  3. Damn - don't move to Prescott, you will definitely be among the darker shades here.

As for the "looking like a criminal" part, I think few of us can claim never breaking some sort of law at one time or another.  Which reminds me, I gotta try to stay out of the sun this summer.

*edit* And fook, make sure I keep my front teeth.

  4. As a platform, she's a legend, but showing her age.  Everything has changed since she was designed and built.  She'll still leave you with a smile, but it's more nostalgic now than pure "wow" from performance.  Others have far eclipsed her.

Glad that yours went to someone who will enjoy it.  I'll ride mine this spring, then maybe list it locally.  Running out of room and I have projects that need garage space to get into.  That, and I no longer travel across the country alone to go to weddings and birthday parties.

Factory farmed birds may be one of the shittiest things we can eat.  And we might create the next pandemic this way.

I've had the, um, "opportunity" to, uh, "tour" several of them, in the course of, mmmm, "interacting" with employees that work at that sort of place.  Observations:

    1. Disgusting

    2. Heartbreaking

Even more disgusting than mushroom farms, which I, uh, "visited" under the same circumstances.  Funny thing, mushroom farms are where all the waste from factory chicken houses and egg farms goes - the poop, the goo that comes out of the machine that they throw the baby male chicks into, the tons of broken eggs, the dead birds they shovel up off the floor and literally load into a dumpster with a front end loader.

Might need to slip some flexible metal conduit over those during the fix. Darn motivated rat.

I have some split-loom stuff on it now that's supposed to work, I just had it in the garage so on it went when I repaired the wires.  We'll see.  I have an old showerhead sprayer hose, much like flexible conduit, that looks ripe for the job if that doesn't work.

He ate a whole cube of poison last night, so I'm guessing his aspiring replacement is considering measuring for new curtains.  Usually a big bull rat like that keeps others scared away for a while and it takes some time for a successor to get curious enough to risk looking around too closely.  I'll have to keep a welcome platter prepared for the next candidate.

Good call.  1982 CB650SC.  It's a friend's "someday" project that I'll probably end up doing for him at some point when I run out of projects of my own.  (giggle)

    Or snake shot.

That relates to a rat trap I meant to post about, then forgot.

Yeah, um, I recommend you don't post that in a public forum.  Friends don't let friends bait the ATF.

    Snakes.  You need snakes.

We've had a couple California King snakes around, but the dogs harass them and off they go.  I'd love to have some in the yard, they're beautiful and not only do they help with the vermin, but rattlesnakes are among their prey as well.  I haven't seen a rattlesnake here yet, I know they're around but my guess is the dogs keep them away as well.

Well, fuck. Definitely rat, not mice.

Is he still there or already left the ship? 🚢

Last one was a BIG rat, probably over a pound.  I should have taken a picture.  He was twice the size of the XL rat trap.  That was this spring, when I found the ABS wiring and the vacuum lines eaten.  Apparently someone stepped into his shoes, simple Christmas lights throughout the engine bay haven't had the desired effect...

But tonight he will feast on death.

...aaaand the Excursion batteries are at 1.5 volts.

First person to say "rat lives matter" gets a free overdose of Coumadin in their beer at the next meet.

Motherfucker sure is an overachiever.  Ima be as diligent in fixing his shit as he was in parting these wires.

  11. I'd rather be with the correct expired plate or no plate at all as opposed to attaching improper plates.  The first two, you may talk your way out of it or worst case get a non-moving violation.  They can be spendy, but they may also be waived, if you get it registered and show the judge.  The last one comes with some suspicion of other impropriety, and an indication of willful intent.  A misdemeanor in most states, I think.

Speaking of which, Ocotillo this weekend as long as the weather isn't shitty.

I have to get my shit together before I can start doing that as a thing.  At a minimum, a bike trailer and get the Excursion back in shape.  I think the XR4 would be perfect for Tawnie, she likes the 530 but I'm claiming that back as the 990 is a little on the porky side for the sandy washes out there.  Doable, but hard work.

...or become a helicopter ride.  No biggie, a Life Flight ride is usually under $40k.

On the couple of occasions that overgassing has failed to save the day, I don't think there has been an appreciable increase in impact velocity compared to what was already predestined.  It either fixes it, or it gets perhaps *slightly* worse.

If I had to guess, it probably has something to do with the drive tire taking a healthy bite, and consequently unweighting the front to a degree.  I know there are a ton of incalculable geometry changes with the application of heavy throttle, but in my experience, engine RPM hasn't changed much from the time the throttle is whacked to the time the crisis has passed... little time to generate "spin up" of flywheel or drive wheel.  It seems to be more the torque making changes throughout the frame and suspension, and perhaps some rider weight shift in anticipation of acceleration.

    LOL.

I've talked to a few people who have "stock" Mikuni pumpers, whatever they ship from the factory I guess.  It cost me $50 extra to get one from XRs only with the adapter ring preinstalled, and jetted for this bike.  Clearly, this was well worth it, the other people are fighting with jets and leaks using some shitty Chinese adapter.

When I bought my first one (XR4), the preinstalled adapter and jetting were the reasons I went with them - that, and XRsOnly's reputation as being experts in a few particular machines.  I think it is money well spent, the second one was a no-brainer.  Your experience confirms my observations, I'm glad those folks are still around.
