  1. Odd timing, but I went to go for a ride the other night and found a dead battery. I put the trickle charger on for a bit, tried to start it and it started! Yeah, right? Just to make sure all was well I put a voltmeter on the battery and saw the voltage increase, then fall back to the low voltage the battery started with. Huh? I decided the ride was not going to happen, and left the battery on the charger overnight. I replaced a completely fried R/R last year, or this spring, can't remember, so I thought it couldn't be that. I felt it while I had the bike running and it was HOT! It took only about one or two minutes to get that hot too, so I knew something was up. Next day the battery was charged up fine (now that I have a replacement ordered!), but had the exact same results, it seemed to be charging ok, then just stopped altogether. So today I take off the tail section, disconnect the R/R, and test the 3 yellow wires coming off the harness. Result? Across the board 0s. Nothing at all. It seems unlikely that would happen, so now I'm paranoid I am somehow not doing something right, even though it seems very easy. Before I order a $200. part for nothing I wonder if someone can tell me if I'm missing something. Help? Thanks in advance! Alan
  2. I was wondering the same thing but assumed it was my imagination. Glad to hear I'm not alone! I'm coming up on 33K and have noticed more vibration than I remember previously. Any ideas on why would be appreciated! Alan
  3. Got some from e-bay thanks for the attempt Allen!!!
  4. Ok, I'm a jerk. A while ago my wife said her brakes felt grabby and pulsating on her F3. I thought she must be exaggerating, how could that just happen for no reason? She didn't tell me again, problem solved! :icon_nono: So I rode it yesterday with her on the back (coming back from selling my XR), and the front brake is BAD!! I asked her why she didn't say anything about it..... Knowing that she had a blown fork seal, I knew how I would be spending today, and it's not enjoying the nice sunshine! So sure enough her right front rotor is SEVERELY warped, don't know how, don't much care except that I don't want to spend $200. for a non-matching EBC rotor. I know I'd have to buy 2, which is double the pain. Does anyone know of anything!? Help! If so call my cell at 206-235-7245, I'm going to go order some new front pads since I am in there anyway and get the stealer to knock out and in an oil seal. Thanks all!! Alan
  5. I'm at 26K though I'm into the red and in need of a chain relatively soon. I've been very kind to my chain considering what I COULD do to it!! AB
  6. Ok, it's officially nap time!!! How did I not see that .1??? I SWEAR I just saw DOT 5...... I'm losin' it.... What Chris said!!!  Alan
  7. One word..... NO!!!! Dot 3 or 4 only! Any 5 and you can start looking for a new brake system or all new seals and lines.
  8. Thanks Mick! I tried looking it up there but no luck. Called but the time difference made it so no one knew anything there (night shift). I'll try again tomorrow, hopefully have some luck. Alan
  9. The "donor" bike is an '82, mine is an '81. ALL the numbers are the same on the parts, except 3 off to the right, which I am guessing is some kind of date code of when it was made, but I'm not sure. Mine says .012, he says his says 103. Nothing that makes any sense to me!! The resistance of my coil was twice what the manual said it should be, which would explain the pathetic spark! It idles but bogs with ANY throttle. Not exactly rideable like that! It did run ok for a short spell but not since, so it's an intermittent problem. Tracking it down to the coil I hope is the last step! Any help at all from part # pros? Thanks guys! It sounds like they are good, solid (though not fast) bikes, once they are running properly! Alan
  10. Also, if anyone is very familiar with part # stampings and what they mean I have a question about the possible replacement I have found.... one little number off to the right side is different but I doubt very much the voltage or anything important would have changed. Just being paranoid! Alan
  11. Off the topic of the XX, but on topic for my commuter bike! I find myself in need of a coil for a 1981 650 Special, and am told they are no longer made by Yamaha. Does anyone know of a source for this part? Any help would be appreciated! I think I've got a good used one tracked down, but would rather get new when it comes to electrical parts. Thanks in advance! Alan
  12. I used a piece of coat hanger with a hook bent into the end to "grab" the springs and the edge of the damping rod when it sort of fell down too far into the tubes. Actually wasn't too bad, provided you can get the allen bolt out of the bottom. And the axle has to be removed to get access to it, I didn't see that anyone had mentioned that for you either. Alan

    K&N Jet Kit?

and no... I haven't installed a K&N kit, but have done several Factory kits and am VERY happy with them. Santiago and Tim are two other people I have installed them for, and they are equally happy with them. Fairly easy to install and OH, so worth it!! Alan
  14. I spearheaded a group buy on an item that was even more likely to improve handling for most riders last year- rear shocks from Penske. Got 10% off already good prices, and I think 3 people including myself took part in it when the chips were down. Not a great turnout, and nowhere near the initial interest people showed when the idea first came up. Given that I see near zero SERIOUS interest in the idea on wheels, I'd say you could count on maybe ONE person coming through in the end- YOU!! Best of luck, I'm just relaying my own experience with the same situation. Alan
  15. You call me up, say you are ready for your screen that's been in my car for 3 weeks, want to clean my "dirty hole" as you like to call it, and I'll take a look at the bike. Alan

    OEM windshields

I have an '01 screen I bought with the intent of replacing my Cheetah but never did. I'd sell it for half what you are looking at paying if you are interested. PM me.... Alan
  17. Graciously the picture is not showing up on my computer at the moment. From the comments above I will just be grateful and never click here again!! Alan
  18. My bet is there wasn't, just because of how casually he drifted off the road. If he had seen something on the road we can be pretty sure he would have paniced and ditched it even harder. I just see a great video of how NOT to ride!
  19. I would check locally with guys who do custom upholstery as well as motorcycle seats. The one that just did mine here in Seattle has a great reputation and was easy to work with. I doubt it's worth a cross-country trip, but if there is someone in your area that does the same thing, it is definately the way to go. Forget about Corbin, as they aren't custom either, just better than stock. Sure it's not cheap to go with a truly custom seat, but you get what you pay for. Plus you can have your passenger's section done just right for her, something you couldn't do otherwise. Just some ideas! Alan
  20. Lucky star #2 happened to be on top of a piece of gravel when he locked up his rear brake, contributing to his exemplary dismount. Not that he needed any help or anything.....
  21. I bought a shock from Traxxion and they have great customer service and very fair prices. As far as quality of product I haven't compared between the two, but my shock has been great as far as improvement over stock, so I'm happy! I don't know if that helps, but thought I'd throw in my $.02...
  22. That really was pathetic!! Not anywhere near too much speed, a Rebel 250 could have made that turn at that speed! Once again someone riding beyond their skill level, which in this case is approaching ZERO!! Then the guy behind him skids on a rock (thus the white skid mark), lets off the rear brake while sideways, and voila!! Crash #2. Let's hear a resounding group THANK YOU for what these guys and oh so many like them do for OUR insurance rates!!! THANKS GUYS!!!!  Alan
  23. Yeah, I thought of you when I first saw that drop on the floor. I thought.. "What the hell? Whatever Tim's bike had my bike picked up! It's the same as a cold!" I still don't know what yours is, but whatever it is it can't be good! Alan
  24. Finally!! Now that makes sense! I did just clean and re-oil my filter, and though it didn't seem like there was excess oil on it at the time, maybe in use with air getting pulled through it some extra oil bled out and found it's way to a low point where it dripped off! Man, I was going nuts with that one! I should have put the two events together in my mind but didn't. Thanks NC!! Alan
  25. No, it's not coolant, I've changed that and know it is the usual green, Honda stuff. Plus it's on the opposite side from the radiator cap. I haven't moved the bike since a ride last Wednsday, but just noticed the drip last night. I'll check tonight and see if there is another one, as I cleaned all the surfaces up really good so I could tell where it came from should it reappear. Really weird though to see something that shouldn't be there!! Alan
